Poison Dart Frog
oil on canvas
"Poison Dart Frog," a commissioned oil on canvas, features several poison dart frogs rendered with detail. Notably, two frogs on the top left and center are depicted in a small kiss, while others emerge from the darkness. In the center, a paintbrush levitates, dripping paint that appears to be creating a dart frog in one of its patterns. This element reflects the artist’s recurring theme of art materials creating or destroying something, adding a narrative layer to the piece.
Before painting Poison Dart Frog, the artist created numerous sketches to understand a frog’s movements, body structure, and anatomical details. This process allowed him to paint lights and darks by understanding why light hits certain points on the amphibian’s anatomy, considering the positioning of arms, legs, elbows, knees, toes, and facial features.
