Creating Space (Cry) — Judith
Oil on canvas.
This painting—a one-year wedding anniversary gift to my wife—portrays Judith Jamison, the extraordinary dancer of the renowned Alvin Ailey American Dance Theater. Unable to buy a tangible gift for his mother’s birthday, Alvin Ailey instead choreographed a powerful ballet in her honor—and for all Black women—titled Cry.
Cry tells the story of a proud woman who has endured unimaginable hardships. Despite her exhaustion, she stands as a queen—resilient and triumphant. She digs into the Earth, reaches toward the heavens, and carves out space for the next generation’s journey, embodying the enduring strength and grace of her heritage.
My inspiration for this piece was further deepened by Judith Jamison’s TED Talk, where she reflected on her remarkable career and the transformative power of dance. Her insights into storytelling through movement illuminated the profound emotional and cultural significance of her artistry, driving me to capture her spirit in this painting.
Her recent passing is a profound loss to the dance community and beyond. She will be remembered for her unparalleled strength, grace, and the enduring impact of her artistry on generations to come.
