Growing up in the quiet corners of North Lauderdale, Florida, the artist was deeply influenced by a woman from church who became an unexpected mentor. Often ferrying the artist to youth group events, she affectionately nicknamed him 'Huey,' a moniker that initially irked the young boy. But through their rides together, the woman introduced the artist to the life of Dr. Huey P. Newton, a founding member of the Black Panther Party, and reshaped the significance of the nickname in the artist’s eyes.

As the artist learned about the Black Panther Party, its goals, and the challenges they faced, he drew parallels with his own life. Having come from an immigrant family from El Salvador, the artist faced the dual challenge of being an American citizen while contending with societal views on immigrants. Through his mentor’s stories and research, he became enamored with figures like Newton and rising leaders —Fred Hampton, the Shakurs, and Bobby Seale. Their dedication and resolve inspired him to portray their tales on canvas.

"The Great Dr. Huey P. Newton’ is a testament to that inspiration. The piece features Dr. Newton front and center, stepping forward as a beacon of strength and resilience. Behind him are key figures from the Black Panther Party, each face illuminated by Newton's halo of wisdom and conviction. The art tells a story of inspiration, defiance, and unity. It also delves deep into historical moments, like the day Newton and Bobby Seale stood their ground against an anticipated raid by the Oakland PD.

This piece measures 3’ x 4’ and is part of "The Great Newtons," and it has a companion piece, “Veritas” depicting Sir Isaac Newton. For more information, click here.

The artist hopes to sell both as a set. Ideally, the two pieces will be positioned on opposite sides of a room, creating a perfect balance of intellectualism and activism, as envisioned by the artist.
