An Experience of Art and Reflection
The Open Studio event highlighted Hugo’s signature themes of identity, resilience, and social justice, fostering discussions that extended beyond the canvas. Creating Space (Cry) - Judith, a focal piece at the event, resonated strongly with attendees, sparking thoughtful conversations. Hugo expressed gratitude for the attendees’ reflections, which enriched the day with new insights and perspectives on his work.
“The Philadelphia Open Studio Tour (POST) was an incredible experience. I loved meeting new faces and hearing people’s thoughts—both about my finished work and the direction I’m heading with my unfinished pieces. One of the most common questions I was asked during POST, and even throughout my journey as an artist, was: Where do you get your inspiration?
My answer has always been the same: life experiences. Or, as I used to jokingly say, nouns! People, places, and things have always been my greatest sources of inspiration, and they continue to shape my creative journey.”
Building Community Through Art
More than just an exhibition, Hugo’s Open Studio provided a platform for community connection. Attendees ranged from his long-time supporters to new faces, all eager to explore Hugo’s art and the stories behind it. The event emphasized the importance of dialogue and community in the artistic experience, bridging connections that deepen the impact of the artwork itself.
